Zirconia is a biocompatible ceramic material that provides a metal-free alternative to traditional titanium dental implants. It can be considered for suitable patients who prefer a ceramic implant option.
A ceramic alternative for patients who specifically prefer a non-metal dental implant.
The naturally white colour of zirconia may be advantageous in certain aesthetic situations, particularly where the surrounding gum tissue is thin.
Zirconia is a biocompatible material with favourable tissue response.
Modern zirconia implants have shown encouraging clinical outcomes, although titanium remains the most extensively researched and established implant material.

Zirconia dental implants are made from a high-strength ceramic material and provide a metal-free alternative to conventional titanium implants. They may be considered for patients who prefer a ceramic implant option, subject to individual clinical suitability.

Your treatment begins with a consultation with Dr Pedram Negahban. He will assess your oral health, discuss your treatment goals and review whether dental implant treatment is suitable for you. If you are considering zirconia implants, Pedram will discuss the zirconia and titanium options with you and whether a zirconia implant is appropriate for your individual case.

We will use digital scans and, where appropriate, CBCT imaging to assess the available bone, surrounding anatomy and the planned implant position. Pedram will plan the treatment around the final restoration, taking into account your bone, gum health, bite and individual clinical needs. If additional procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift are required, these will be discussed with you as part of your treatment plan.

Pedram will surgically place the zirconia implant into the planned position in the jawbone. The procedure is normally carried out under local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. The implant is then left to integrate with the surrounding bone during the healing period. Where a temporary tooth is required, the appropriate option will be planned for your individual case without compromising implant healing.

Once the implant has integrated and healing is complete, your final restoration will be fitted to restore the appearance and function of the missing tooth. Pedram will check the fit, bite and appearance and explain how to care for your implant and restoration long term.
Zirconia dental implants are made from a strong ceramic material and provide a metal-free alternative to traditional titanium implants. They are designed to integrate with the jawbone and support a replacement tooth in much the same way as a conventional dental implant.
Not necessarily. Titanium remains the most established and extensively researched material used in dental implant treatment. Zirconia implants have shown encouraging clinical outcomes and can provide an alternative for suitable patients, but the long-term evidence base is smaller than for titanium. Pedram will discuss the advantages and limitations of both materials with you rather than routinely recommending one material for every patient.
Some patients specifically prefer a ceramic, metal-free implant. Zirconia is biocompatible and naturally white, which may also be advantageous in certain aesthetic situations, particularly where the surrounding gum tissue is thin. The decision should ultimately depend on both your clinical circumstances and your personal preference.
Zirconia implants have shown good survival rates in clinical studies, including encouraging results at five years and beyond. However, titanium has been used for considerably longer and has a much larger body of long-term evidence. For that reason, we would not claim that zirconia and titanium have identical long-term evidence.
There is currently not enough evidence to say that zirconia implants reduce the risk of peri-implantitis compared with titanium implants. Good oral hygiene, regular dental examinations, implant reviews and professional hygiene appointments remain important whichever implant material is used.
Zirconia implants may be an option if you would prefer a ceramic, metal-free implant, but suitability needs to be assessed individually. Pedram will consider your bone, gum health, implant position, bite, functional demands and the planned final restoration before discussing which implant options are appropriate for you.
