Helps rebuild lost bone, providing support where it is needed around a natural tooth or for dental implant treatment.
Treatment is carefully planned and carried out by Dr Pedram Negahban or our Specialist Periodontist, Dr Federico Tinti, depending on your individual needs.
Every bone graft is planned around your individual anatomy and what we are trying to achieve.
Rebuilding lost bone can help support the long-term health and stability of natural teeth or dental implants.
When a tooth is lost, the bone that once supported it is no longer stimulated in the same way and gradually begins to change in shape and volume. Over time, this can leave less bone available for a dental implant.
Bone grafting can rebuild or preserve bone where needed, helping to create suitable support for future implant treatment.
Before recommending bone grafting, we carefully assess the area and the surrounding anatomy. Where appropriate, a 3D CBCT scan can help us evaluate the amount and shape of the available bone and plan treatment safely.
Enough bone available
An implant may be placed without the need for bone grafting.
A small amount of additional bone is needed
In suitable cases, bone grafting may be carried out at the same time as implant placement.
More significant bone loss is present
A separate bone grafting procedure may be recommended before implant placement, allowing time for the grafted area to heal first.
Bone grafting involves placing a carefully selected grafting material in an area where additional bone is needed. This provides a framework that supports new bone formation as the area heals.
Depending on the individual case, the graft may be placed at the same time as a dental implant or as a separate procedure beforehand. Healing time varies according to the type and extent of grafting, and we will explain what to expect as part of your treatment plan.
Bone grafting is a procedure used to rebuild or preserve bone in areas where it has been lost. In dentistry, it is commonly used to create or maintain suitable bone for dental implants and, in selected periodontal cases, as part of regenerative treatment around natural teeth.
If there is not enough bone to support a dental implant in the planned position, bone grafting may be recommended to rebuild the area. Whether grafting is needed depends on the amount and shape of the available bone, the position of the implant and your individual anatomy.
Different types of bone grafting material can be used depending on the clinical situation. These may include carefully processed donor or animal-derived materials, synthetic grafting materials, or in some cases a small amount of your own bone. We will explain which material is recommended for you and why.
Bone grafting is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should be comfortable during the procedure. Some swelling, tenderness or bruising afterwards is normal and usually settles as the area heals. We will give you clear aftercare instructions and advice on managing any discomfort.
Initial swelling and tenderness usually settle during the early healing period, although this varies depending on the extent of the procedure. The graft itself takes longer to mature and integrate with the surrounding bone. If an implant is being placed at a later stage, we will advise you on the appropriate timing for your individual case.
Bone grafting is a well-established procedure and can provide predictable results in appropriately selected cases. The outcome depends on several factors, including the amount and type of bone loss, the grafting procedure required, your general and oral health, and how the area heals. We will discuss the expected outcome and any individual risks with you before treatment.
Bone grafting is carried out by Dr Pedram Negahban, DDS (Germany), Dip Implant Dentistry RCS Eng, as part of implant treatment, and by Dr Federico Tinti, Specialist Periodontist, where regenerative periodontal treatment is appropriate. The clinician most appropriate for your treatment will depend on why bone grafting is needed and what we are trying to achieve.
