What are All-on-4 implants?
All-on-4 is a treatment concept used to replace a full arch of missing or failing teeth with a fixed bridge supported by dental implants.
Despite the name, full-arch treatment does not always involve exactly four implants. Depending on the individual case, four to six implants may be used and are carefully positioned to provide support for the replacement teeth.
Where the implants achieve sufficient stability and the conditions are right, a fixed temporary bridge can often be fitted on the same day. The implants still need time to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone before the final teeth are made.
What does All-on-4 treatment involve?
Consultation
Your first appointment is about understanding your concerns and what you would like to achieve. Pedram will examine your teeth, gums and bite, review your dental and medical history and discuss the possible treatment options with you.
Further investigations, including 3D imaging, may be needed before the final treatment plan is confirmed.
Planning
Using your examination, 3D imaging and digital scans, Pedram carefully plans the position of the implants and the design of your new teeth.
The available bone, gum tissues, bite, function and appearance are all considered when deciding on the most appropriate approach for you.
Implant placement
Pedram places the implants in the carefully planned positions under local anaesthetic. If failing teeth need to be removed, this can often be carried out at the same appointment.
The number and position of the implants are determined by your individual anatomy and treatment plan.
Your new teeth
If the implants achieve good stability and the conditions are right, a fixed temporary bridge can usually be fitted on the same day. This means you can leave with fixed teeth while the implants heal and integrate with the bone.
Once healing is complete, your final teeth are made, with careful attention to your bite, function and appearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once healing is complete, most patients find their fixed implant-supported teeth comfortable and secure. They do not move like removable dentures and are designed to allow you to eat and speak comfortably.
There will naturally be some discomfort and swelling during the initial healing period, and we will explain what to expect and how to manage this after treatment.
Dental implants are intended as a long-term treatment, but no implant can be guaranteed to last for life. Their longevity depends on several factors, including oral hygiene, gum and bone health, general health, smoking and regular professional maintenance.
The bridge itself may also require maintenance, repair or replacement over time.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain while the implants are being placed. Some swelling, tenderness and discomfort afterwards is normal and varies from patient to patient.
We will explain what to expect and provide appropriate aftercare and pain-relief advice.
The surgical stage and, where appropriate, fitting of a fixed temporary bridge can often be completed on the same day. However, this does not mean the entire treatment is completed in one day.
The implants still need time to heal and integrate with the bone. Once healing is complete, usually after around three months, Pedram can proceed with the final bridge. The exact timing depends on the individual case and how the implants and surrounding tissues are healing.
All-on-4 may be suitable for patients who have lost most or all of their teeth, have failing teeth, or are struggling with removable dentures.
It is not suitable for everyone. Pedram assesses the available bone, gum health, bite, general health and individual circumstances before recommending whether All-on-4 or another implant approach would be more appropriate.
Aftercare is an important part of full-arch implant treatment. We will review you during healing to check the implants, gums, bite and temporary teeth and make any adjustments that may be needed.
Once the final teeth are fitted, looking after them properly at home is just as important. Pedram and our team will show you how to clean around your implants and bridge, and regular hygiene appointments and implant reviews allow us to monitor the implants, surrounding gum and bone, and your final restoration over time.
