What is periodontics?

Periodontics focuses on the health of your gums and supporting tissues of your teeth, including the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gum disease. A healthy mouth is essential to prevent pain, tooth loss, and other complications that can affect your overall and oral health. A specialist periodontist can improve your gum health and quality of life, even in more complex cases.

Common periodontal treatments include root planing and pocket reduction to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, and gum grafts and crown lengthening to restore lost tissue and improve appearance. Let us help you manage gum disease and enhance your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a periodontist do?

A periodontist is a dentist with additional qualifications in the diagnosis and treatment of problems that affect the gum and bone around teeth. They work with our hygienists to provide complete dental care, and can perform specialist surgery when it is required.

Will I need periodontal surgery?

Periodontal surgery is sometimes necessary for more complex cases. This can be used to correct remaining gum problems and also areas of gum recession. We will discuss this with you at your consultation.

Can gum disease be reversed?

In the early stages, gum disease can be reversed with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene. However, as the disease progresses into periodontitis, it may require more invasive treatments to manage and control. A specialist periodontist can help in these situations.

How long does periodontal treatment take?

The length of periodontal treatment depends on the severity of the gum disease. Some treatments may be completed in a single visit, while others may require multiple appointments.

Is periodontal treatment painful?

Modern dental techniques have made periodontal treatment much less painful than it used to be. We also use local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort, and can use sedation if appropriate.

Can teeth affected by gum disease be saved?

If gum disease is diagnosed early, tooth loss can be avoided. Many teeth can be saved with proper treatment. Even where they have become loose and drifted, the process can be halted provided sufficient bone support remains around the teeth.
